About CommunicationAI
Is this something Firstup created or something you’re offering through a third-party?
- The CommunicationAI functionality is an integration between Firstup and OpenAI and operates like any other integration that we offer. Firstup’s use and storage of a customer’s data does not change. If a customer enables the integration, Firstup will then permit the transmission of applicable data to OpenAI via the integration.
- These AI capabilities function through an integration between Firsup and the Enterprise API and Large Language Model (LLM) provided by OpenAI.

Which version of the OpenAI API are you using? Do you use the Azure OpenAI API?
- The primary distinction between the Azure-branded OpenAI API and its non-branded counterpart lies in their integration with the Azure ecosystem. Opting for the Azure version grants users not only enhanced support but also a suite of additional services tailored to leverage the full potential of Microsoft's cloud platform. - At its core, the collaboration between Microsoft Azure and OpenAI has given birth to an exclusive variant of the OpenAI API that is seamlessly integrated within the Azure framework. This partnership ensures users access cutting-edge AI functionalities capable of performing a wide array of tasks from natural language processing and image recognition to sophisticated text generation. Firstup opts for utilizing OpenAI's standalone Enterprise API—accessible outside of Azure’s environment—boasting equivalent AI capabilities without embedding into Azure's service architecture.
If you turn the AI functionality on, will it then start to be trained on our community's data? Or is that happening even without turning the functionality on?
- None of the AI is trained using customer data.
- Depending on the feature, Firstup will utilize customer data like topic name and description to generate topic suggestions.
- The user initiates the AI by clicking on the icon for all features except for Sentiment Analysis. Once enabled, Sentiment Analysis runs as comments are added to posts by employees and the results are used to generate the sentiment evaluation of positive, negative, neutral, or mixed for the campaign. Once enabled, the AI will only have access to campaign content and comments added to the platform after enablement unless there is an option for you to enable access to pre-existing campaign content and comments.
Is the data anonymized?
- No, the data is not anonymized when sent to OpenAI, because it is not intended nor necessary for the Firstup platform to send any PII data to OpenAI. However, it is possible that users of the Content Assist and Comment Assist features may send PII as part of campaign content and comments, for example, by mentioning someone by name in a comment.

Does the customer need to sign anything to use the CommunicationAI features on Firstup?
- AI features will be Opt-In Only. All customers using AI features will be asked to accept a Generative AI Product Attachment, which includes agreeing to OpenAI’s Terms of Use. We will send the AI-specific Product Attachment via DocuSign to an authorized representative, which will function as an amendment to the customer’s agreement with Firstup.
What is the purpose of the Generative AI Product Attachment?
- The Generative AI Product Attachment explains our and your relationship with OpenAI as a third-party vendor, clarifies that the functionality is available via an integration with OpenAI, and has terms specific to how the integration is to be used.
If we enter proprietary information in an article, does that mean OpenAI will have access to that content?
- Not all AI features require community/content data to function. We never automatically send article content to OpenAI. See the feature matrix for specific feature actions. Although OpenAI may retain the article information, they state in their data policy that:
- OpenAI only retains inputs/outputs for 30 days, mainly to help identify abuse.
- Data from their API Platform is not used to train their models.
- Data is routed through the US, but the routes remain GDPR compliant.
How is data handled with your AI features?

What security and privacy controls does ChatGPT Enterprise offer?
- OpenAI does not train on your business data or conversations, and the models don’t learn from your usage. ChatGPT Enterprise is also SOC2 and GDPR compliant and all conversations are encrypted in transit and at rest.

How does OpenAI ensure data security?
- OpenAI encrypts all data at rest (AES-256) and in transit (TLS 1.2+), and uses strict access controls to limit who can access data. They offer a Bug Bounty Program for responsible disclosure of vulnerabilities discovered on our platform and products.

Does OpenAI review my business data?
- We may run any business data submitted to OpenAI’s services through automated content classifiers and safety tools, including to better understand how our services are used. The classifications created are metadata about the business data but do not contain any of the business data itself. Business data is only subject to human review as described below on a service-by-service basis.
Is CommunicationAI intended to be used with sensitive data?
- No, the Firstup platform is not intended for the processing of any sensitive personal information . Customers should not input social security or other government issued identification number, passport number, driver's license number, full birthdate, or similar identifier, or any protected health or financial information.
Who can view stored API inputs, outputs, and fine-tuning data?
- Firstup’s access to API business data stored on our systems is limited to (1) authorized employees who require access for engineering support, investigating potential platform abuse, and legal compliance and (2) specialized third-party contractors who are bound by confidentiality and security obligations, solely to review for abuse and misuse.
GDPR & Data Retention
Is any PII sent to OpenAI?
- The Firstup platform does not send any PII data to OpenAI. However, users that use the Content Assist and Comment Assist features may send PII through campaign content and comments, for example, by including a person’s name in a post.
Does CommunicationAI support my compliance with GDPR and other privacy laws?
- Firstup has entered into a Data Processing Agreement directly with OpenAI in compliance with GDPR and other privacy laws.
How does OpenAI handle data retention and monitoring for API usage?
- OpenAI may securely retain API inputs and outputs for up to 30 days to provide the services and to identify abuse. Further information may be found in OpenAI's Data Processing Addendum.
