Firstup's Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration lets employees search and retrieve Firstup content directly within ChatGPT Enterprise, bringing your organization's knowledge into the tools your workforce already uses every day. This article walks administrators through setting up the MCP connector as a custom app in ChatGPT, from configuring the app console and publishing it to your workspace, to granting access, managing actions and approvals, and understanding the end-user sign-in experience.
Prerequisites
- Admin Access: You must be logged in as a ChatGPT Enterprise administrator.
- Developer Mode: Development mode for custom apps/MCP connectors must be enabled in ChatGPT.
- MCP Endpoint URL: Obtain your community-specific MCP endpoint URL from your Firstup Account Manager.
Administrator Setup
Step 1: Access the App Console
- Log in to your ChatGPT Enterprise workspace.
- Navigate to Admin Console > Apps.
Step 2: Create the MCP App
- Click Create / New App and select the Custom Tool option.
- Enter a Name (e.g.,
[Community Name] MCP) and an optional Description. - Paste the community-specific MCP endpoint URL into the Server URL Connection field.
- Advanced OAuth is not necessary.
- Upload an optional custom Icon. If you don't add a custom icon, a default icon will be used. (Custom icons cannot be changed later without recreating the connection.)
- Check the developer acknowledgment box and click Create.
Step 3: Publish & Grant Permissions
- Switch to the Drafts tab (refresh the browser if the draft does not appear immediately).
- Click Publish on your new app.
- Under Configure Access, select which workspace role groups (e.g., Engineering, Marketing, Workspace) can use the app.
- Accept the standard platform risk/security acknowledgment prompts.
- Click Publish to make it live in the workspace app directory.
Step 4: Configure App Actions & Approvals
- Find the published app in the directory and click Manage App.
- Under Configure Actions, choose whether to enable all retrieved MCP actions/tools or toggle specific capabilities on/off.
- Under Configure Approvals, select the default approval rules for user prompts.
- Click Save.
User Experience
- Once the app is published, workspace users can select it directly in ChatGPT.
- The first time a user submits a prompt through the connector, ChatGPT asks them to authenticate.
- A browser window opens, where the user signs in through SSO/Web Experience and receives an OAuth token that authorizes access to their data.
