Application and Stability Monitoring Consent
When launching the Firstup mobile application (v. 4.4.0+) for the first time, all users will be presented with a request for consent: "Application and Stability Monitoring Consent". This will allow our Engineering team to gather crash logs and monitor overall mobile application stability. No personal data will be collected with this consent, only stability monitoring data.
Enable Push Notifications
When you download the iOS app and register for the first time, you will be prompted to allow push notifications. Push notifications include important announcements, new content, events, and breaking news. We encourage users to allow push notifications, but if you do disallow push notifications then featured content can still be found under Highlights.
For Android app users, push notifications are already enabled.
iOS users can review (but not change) the current push notification configuration in the Firstup app under Settings.
After the initial prompt is gone, iOS and Android users both manage the push notification configuration through the phone's settings.
iPhone:
- Go to phone Settings
- Tap on Notifications
- Select [App Name]
- Allow Notifications or disable them
- Customize the message display
Android:
- Go to phone Settings
- Tap on Apps
- Select [App Name]
- Tap on Notifications,
- Allow Notifications or disable them
- Customize the message display
Enable Device Authentication
Some communities will have device authentication available to make your app more secure and easier to access at the same time. This safety feature is also known as biometric access, easy access, use Touch ID, or use Face ID.
When available for you, after signing in you will be prompted to enable device authentication, say no, or enable later. If enabled, after signing in every time you reopen the app you will be prompted to confirm your identity. Depending on your device, the confirmation method may be one of the following:
- iOS Touch ID
- iOS Face ID
- Android Fingerprint
- Android PIN and/or pattern
Note, if you are signed out for any reason then you will still need to know your password to sign back into the app. Device authentication is used for reopening the app only.
This setting can be toggled On/Off from within the mobile app - navigate to Settings and look for Enable Device Authentication, Use Touch ID, Use Face ID, etc.
Grant Access to Photos
Grant Permission to Access Photos When Prompted
When you install an app from the iTunes App Store or Google Play Store, you control which information that app can access. If viewing your mobile device's photos through the mobile app, you will be asked to grant access to your photos.
You will be asked this once during the first time you perform either of the two activities below:
- when you upload your photo in your Profile
- when you submit a photo through the submit content functionality
If you grant permission, you will be able to access your library photos at any time to update your profile photo or submit a photo.
Grant Permission to Access Photos Later - Or Remove Permission
If you said "no" when the app prompted you to grant permission, you can always grant permission later. Alternatively, if you no longer want to grant your app access to your photos, you can revoke permission.
iOS Devices
-
Settings > Privacy > Photos
-
Tap your app and choose 'Never' under ALLOW PHOTOS ACCESS
Android Devices
Steps outlined by Android here.
Authorize the Android App to Make and Manage Phone Calls
On some Android phones, authorization to "make and manage phone calls" is needed to send push notifications.
If you encounter this message, tapping Allow will enable push notifications. Firstup will not actually make or manage any phone calls.
Unable to download the App
If you receive the following error message when trying to download the app, you will need to speak with your internal IT to have permission granted to download.
Error: Your administrator has not given you access to this item
