Firstup requires Transport Layer Security (TLS) version 1.2 or higher for all outbound email delivery. This helps protect potentially sensitive employer-to-employee communications against interception during transmission.
This requirement applies to all recipient email providers and domains.
Email Security Requirements
To receive email from Firstup, the recipient’s email server must support an encrypted connection using TLS 1.2 or higher.
Firstup does not deliver email over:
- Unencrypted SMTP connections.
- Connections using outdated protocols, including TLS 1.0 or TLS 1.1.
Firstup will not downgrade its encryption requirements to accommodate an unsupported email server.
TLS protects email during transmission between mail servers. It does not provide end-to-end encryption. Once an email is delivered, its storage and security are governed by the recipient’s email provider.
What Happens If a Recipient’s Email Server Does Not Support TLS?
If the recipient’s email server cannot establish a connection using TLS 1.2 or higher, the email will not be delivered and will result in a delivery error.
If employees are not receiving Firstup emails, ask your IT team or email provider to confirm that the receiving email server supports TLS 1.2 or higher.
For other possible causes of delivery failures, see Why is a User Not Receiving an Email Campaign?.
Options for Employees Using Unsupported Email Providers
Some employees, including frontline workers, may use personal or legacy email services that do not meet these requirements.
Where an employee’s email provider does not support TLS 1.2 or higher, consider the following alternatives, subject to your organization’s policies and available access options:
- Firstup mobile app: Access communications through the mobile app.
- Firstup web experience: Access communications through the web experience using a supported browser.
- Alternative email address: Use an email address with a provider that supports TLS 1.2 or higher.
Recommendations for Administrators
Work with your IT team to confirm that your corporate email infrastructure supports TLS 1.2 or higher. Consider any third-party email providers used by employees who receive Firstup communications.
Alongside meeting these security requirements, review the email configuration guidance in Email & Web Delivery and Rendering, including:
- Allowlist Emails from Firstup
- Make Firstup a Trusted Sender
- Allow Images and Links in Email from Firstup
