Firstup has introduced criteria you can use to build audiences and define journey membership for a broad range of use cases:
- Use relative operators and date range options (i.e., 'Last Work Week') to unlock more journey use cases, such as sending a message to anyone with a 'Start Date' date in the last work week.
- Use 'Anniversary' and 'Birthday' (MM-DD fields) to send out celebratory communications.
- Use multiple operators to create milestone journeys.
- Create audiences using standard fields before data onboarding so that you can set up your journey ahead of time.
System Date Attributes
Firstup supports both YYYY-MM-DD and MM-DD date formats for birthdays and work anniversaries to aid in a wide range of Journeys use cases. When Firstup is provided 'Start Date' or 'Date of Birth' in the (YYYY-MM-DD) format, we will automatically provide the MM-DD version of those fields ('Anniversary' and 'Birthday', respectively). The value of those fields will be in the (MM-DD) format of the provided 'Start Date' / 'Date of Birth'.

Date Operators
Firstup has created journey-specific date operators to optimize the creation of audiences for journeys. Both system and custom date attributes utilize the same date operators:
-
On, Before, or After - This operator will select a single day from the calendar drop-down. In the screenshot below, this audience would include all users who started at the company on the selected date(YYYY-MM-DD). You could also change the operator to 'Before' or 'After' to include all users who started before or after the selected date.
-
Between - Use the dual calendar drop-down to select your date range. In the screenshot below, this audience would include all users whose birthdays were between the selected dates, including the selected dates.
-
In Past - This operator will select the past x days/weeks/months/years, including today. In the screenshot below, this audience would include all users who started at the company within the last 5 days, including today. If today is the 22nd, the audience would include all users who started between the 17th and the 22nd.
-
In Past Before - This operator will select all days prior to the past x days/weeks/months/years, including today. In the screenshot below, this audience would include all users who started with the company before the last 5 days, including today. If today is the 22nd, the audience would include all users who started before the 18th.
-
In Future - This operator will select the next x days/weeks/months/years, including today. In the screenshot below, this audience would include all users starting at the company within the next 5 days, including today. If today is the 22nd, the audience would include all users who started between the 22nd and the 27th.
-
In Future After - This operator will select all days after the next x days/weeks/months/years, including today. In the screenshot below, this audience would include all users who started with the company after the next 5 days, including today. If today is the 22nd, the audience would include all users who started after the 26th.
-
In Time Frame - This operator will select days within the selected time frame. In the screenshot below, this audience would include all users with a birthday during the current week(Sunday through Saturday).
Yesterday - Starts and ends the day before today
Today - Starts and ends today
Tomorrow - Starts and ends the day after today
(Last/This) Work Week - Monday through Friday
(Last/This/Next) Week - Starts the Sunday of the week and ends the Saturday of the week
(Last/This/Next) Month - Starts the first day of the month and ends the last day of the month
(Last/This) Quarter - Starts the first day of the first month of the quarter; ends the last day of the last month of the quarter
(Last/This) Year - Starts the first day of the first month of the year; ends the last day of the last month of the year
Use Cases
Onboarding Journey
You want to begin an onboarding journey for all users who started during the last work week. To create an audience for this journey, use the 'Start Date' attribute to include the year, month, and day (YYYY-MM-DD). This will avoid pulling in users with an anniversary of the same month and day but a different year. When selecting the time frame value, choose 'Last Work Week' to pull in all users who started at the company last work week (Monday through Friday).
Daily Anniversary or Birthday Journey
You'd like to send a message to all users celebrating an anniversary or birthday today/tomorrow/this work week, etc. To create an audience for this journey, use the 'Anniversary' or 'Birthday' attributes to include only the month and day (MM-DD) and the 'In Time Frame' operator. When selecting the time frame value, choose your preferred time frame to pull in all users celebrating their anniversary or birthday during that time frame. If you select 'Today', users will be pulled into the journey if their anniversary or birthday falls on the present day. If you were to select 'This Work Week', users will be pulled in if and when their anniversary or birthday falls on any of this work week's days.
Milestone Anniversary Journey
You want to create a journey that sends a congratulatory communication to users celebrating their 10-year anniversary. Use the 'Start Date' attribute to include the year, month, and day (YYYY-MM-DD). This will avoid pulling in users who have an anniversary of the same month and day, but a different year. You will use both the 'In Past' and 'In Past Before' operators to select a single day in the past. With a daily journey start, a journey targeted to this audience would pull in users whose anniversary falls on today's date 10 years ago.
Survey Journey
You'd like to send a survey communication to all users who started at your company before the last month. For this journey, select 'Start Date' as the attribute to include the year. Selecting the 'In Past Before' operator and 1 month as the value, will include users who started any day before the last month (today included). If, for example, today is November 22nd, this will include all users who started before October 22nd.
