Focused Content addresses the desire of customers to selectively share content within their communities, ensuring visibility only to specific audiences. The feature streamlines topic structure, making content creation and publishing much simpler while allowing a greater level of content targeting to the audience. With focused content, the normal Deliver page options are still available. This feature works with both posts and resources.
- Targeted Visibility: Content is only visible to selected audiences, ensuring relevance and confidentiality.
- Streamlined Topic Structure: Simplifies topic organization by allowing multiple audiences within a single topic.
- Customized Content Delivery: Enables customization of topic pages and content visibility based on audience preferences.
- Improved Communication: Empowers users to deliver more targeted and engaging experiences, leading to enhanced communication satisfaction and better results.
Before You Start
This article assumes you are signed in to Creator Studio and have a role with permissions to create and edit campaigns. To learn more about campaign publishing permissions, refer to this article.
This article dives deeper into campaign targeting. To learn about campaign targeting basics, refer to Deliver Page Overview and Target a Topic to Specific Audiences, and to learn how to target blocks, refer to Targeted Blocks: By Channel and Audience Block Targeting.
Enable for Content
To further limit content visibility within selected topics, choose your topics and audiences, then select the Limit campaigns to specific audiences checkbox. The campaign will only be visible to users who belong to both the selected topics and the selected audiences. If no topic is selected, only users who belong to the audience will see the content in For You.
Once the audience/s has been selected and the feature is enabled, the Plan will provide results based on this selection.
Content Visibility
The visibility of content published to a topic varies based on the user’s relationship to the topic and falls into three possible categories.
- User follows the topic - The user will see the content in the topic and in For You.
- User does not follow the topic, but the topic is public - The user will see the content in For You, as well as in the topic.
- User does not follow the topic and cannot follow the topic (targeted to an audience the user is not a member of) - The content will appear in For You for the user.
In all cases, the content appears in the order of the hierarchy on the home page. If the content has been featured, it will appear in that section. If it is in Latest or Trending, it will appear in those sections, etc. (with focused visibility only).
FAQ
How is this different from existing targeted topics?
Previously, visibility was tied directly to the topic level—if you were in the topic, you saw everything in it. Focused Content breaks that link, allowing for "micro-targeting" within a topic. It provides the flexibility to keep your topic structure simple while ensuring content remains highly relevant to the individual.
What is the difference between Audience Block Targeting and Focused Content?
Audience Block Targeting controls which version of a campaign an audience receives. Focused Content controls which audiences receive the campaign
Where do I find this setting in Creator Studio?
The feature is located on the Deliver page. Once you select a topic and an audience, you will see a checkbox to Limit the campaign to specific audiences. Selecting this box ensures that only the selected audience sees the content, even if the topic is open to a much larger group.
Is the audience targeting static or dynamic?
It is completely dynamic. The system regularly refreshes audience memberships. If an employee transfers from London to New York, they will automatically stop seeing UK-focused content and begin seeing US-focused content within the same HR topic as soon as their employee profile updates.
Does this affect Direct Delivery (Email and Push notifications)?
Yes. When you select the checkbox to limit the campaign, it affects both the visibility of the post within the application and the actual delivery. Only those who meet the audience criteria will receive the associated email or push notifications if they are selected in the delivery settings.
Can this be used for sensitive content?
Absolutely. It is an ideal tool for "ring-fencing" information. For example, you can publish a post to a general "Production Floor" topic but limit the visibility to "Permanent Staff" only, ensuring that contractors or external partners in that same topic cannot see the sensitive update.
If I change the audience/s for Focused Content after a campaign has been published, how long will it take for the content visibility to be updated in the member experience?
It can take up to 30 minutes for the content visibiilty to be adjusted.
Does this work within Knowledge Hubs?
Yes. Because Knowledge Hubs function as enhanced topics, you can use Focused Content to show or hide specific posts on the Knowledge Hub’s activity page based on the user’s audience attributes.
Does the Microsoft Teams integration support focused content?
This depends on the type of integration you are utilizing:
- The Tab App Experience: Yes. This integration utilizes a user-to-user mapping, allowing the Firstup web experience to be accessed directly within Teams. Content remains focused and targeted to the individual user based on their specific profile and attributes.
- Topic-to-Channel Mapping: No. This integration utilizes a topic-to-channel mapping. Because the content is mapped to a channel rather than an individual user, the system assumes the content should be pushed to the channel at large.
Do Firstup microapps support focused content?
The ability to display focused content within a microapp depends entirely on whether the user is authenticated (logged in).
- When a user is not logged in: No. Without a login, the microapp is anonymous and cannot identify the user's audience attributes. It will only display content from open topics that have been marked as Shareable.
- When a user is logged in: Yes. Once authenticated, the microapp recognizes the user's unique profile and audience associations. It will display the personalized "Latest" feed and any content specifically targeted to that user's audience.
How do authentication modes affect focused content visibility in microapps?
- Restricted & Trusted Modes: These modes allow for a sign-in prompt (or a "silent" SSO login). Once the handshake is successful, the user sees their focused content.
- Public Mode: This mode is designed for accessibility without a login. Therefore, it never shows focused content—only general, shareable posts.
- Admin Mode: This is a curated view that displays all content from a specific source regardless of targeting; it bypasses individual "focusing" to show everything to everyone.
