How does Firstup determine a user's base language?
A user's base language is determined the same way as content translation, in which we determine a user’s language based on their browser's default language (desktop) and/or their device language (mobile).
Will comments created before enabling this feature be translated?
Yes, the translate option will be available for all community comments with this feature enabled.
What happens if there are multiple languages in a single comment?
When dealing with multiple languages, AWS identifies the dominant language of the comment based on a certainty percentage. This percentage indicates AWS's confidence that the suggested language matches the text. The current threshold is set at 60% certainty. If AWS is at least 60% certain about a specific language being dominant, that language will be used. If the certainty is below 60%, a dominant language cannot be detected, and users will not have the option to translate the comment. For this reason, we advise against the use of mixed-language comments if translation will be required. For example, translation is not guaranteed if a comment combines characters (emojis, English, and Mandarin characters).
If a comment is translated, will the campaign content be automatically translated too?
No, content and comment translation actions will remain separate.
Are there any cases where a comment can't or won't be translated?
Yes, there are a few instances in which we won’t be able to provide translations for a comment:
- The comment is already in the user’s browser or device language.
- The comment is posted in a language we don’t support.
- The comment includes multiple languages, and we cannot determine a primary language.
- The comment includes more emojis than text.
